Diving Deeper

Diving Deeper - "The Senses"

By Robyn Grose - Canterbury & Box Hill Franchisee & Teacher

For babies and young children the world is a magical mix of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touchables! Unlike most adults, children feel first and think later, and that’s a beautiful thing! So how can you help your child (and yourself!) enjoy an even richer sensory experience? For very young children, music has power and meaning that go beyond words. First and most important, sharing music with young children is simply one more way to give and receive love. Music and musical experiences also support the formation of important brain connections that are being established over the first few years of life.

Onlooker Learners

This is a gorgeous video of Arlo (2 years old – from Katrina’s Moonee Ponds class) playing the "Goodbye Song" for his grandmother Sandra at home. Katrina said that Arlo doesn't speak in class except to maybe say he's going "home" during the goodbye song. He does not leave his grandmother's side the entire class.

Katrina also said that he normally only answers her through his body language, but apparently, watches her like a hawk. She often catches his eyes lighting up with excitement at different times throughout the class.

In the video Arlo is playing at home, what he has learnt in class, purely from observing and copying. He mimics Katrina wonderfully including the sustained note that she plays at the end of the song. We have many onlooker-learners who attend Mini Maestros classes, and this video just goes to show the extent of how much they actually absorb.

We enjoyed hearing Arlo's rendition of the "Goodbye Song." Thank you Sandra and Katrina for sharing.

This is a photo of Dhruv who attends classes with Janet in Port Melbourne.

Nivedita, Dhruv’s mother wrote in with the following story.

“Dhruv is always excited about his Tuesday class. So much so, that he is awake at 5am and gets into the pram in his night dress, and asks us to take him to the class immediately. It is a daunting task to make him understand that the class is at 11am and that it is only 5am.

My husband asked Dhruv if he like going to the daycare. “No,” Dhruv replied before spontaneously saying, “I like going to bumblebee.”

Stop Nose Bleeds

By Nataly Tormey - WWC Education www.wwced.com

COMMON MISTAKE = ‘‘Stop nose bleeds by pinching the bridge of the nose and getting your child to tilt backwards."

While this is certainly the neater option, it can make your little one feel pretty unwell to swallow too much blood. Instead, the current medical recommendation is to pinch the fleshy part of their nose together for ten minutes while you get them to lean forward over their knees.
