"The Power of Song"

By Kitty Skeen - Mini Maestros Bendigo Teacher and Franchisee

What if I told you, there was one activity you can do that can be done by anyone, of any age, with no experience or qualifications.
It can be done at work, at celebrations and funerals, at church, indoors or outdoors, and is legal and inexpensive. This one activity can give you the shivers, move you to tears, make you smile, stop you in your tracks. It is something you can do alone, but much better in a group, and can have social, mental and health benefits. Would you believe me? I am, of course, talking about music, but more specifically about singing and the power of song.

Why Have Concerts?

Why Have Concerts?

By Emma Hart - Head of Teaching

The Mini Maestros concerts are a wonderful way to celebrate our year of learning and confidence building together. They provide an opportunity for building community through inter-generational social time, and most importantly, allow our children to present their love of music and learning before a very supportive and loving audience.

One of the primary benefits of an experience such as this, is the building of confidence in public settings. Many parents of past graduates have attributed their child’s ability to present enthusiastically at school assemblies, performances and even reading solo in class, to the early performance opportunities provided at Mini Maestros classes and concerts.

Further still, concerts allow children to watch their peers and learn how to be part of an audience. This is integral for the development of listening, and critical thinking skills (analysis). Research suggests that children learn best from their peers, and our observations over the years confirm this. Children absolutely love watching the other age groups, which gives them and their families a marker of how far they’ve come, or what to look forward to in the year ahead.

Meet the Team

Meeting The Head Office Team

Maddy Kelly is Mini Maestros’ Training and Development Officer. In this role she is responsible for teaching classes, training and assessing teachers, and working on the Mini Maestros training program.

Maddy was born into a family of musicians and music teachers alike, with both her parents being successful singer/songwriters and performers. She grew up singing and performing with her family and soon began teaching herself a range of instruments. Maddy has toured through Europe, Australia and New Zealand as a backing singer for blues artist CW Stone King, and as a singer and keyboard player for Dan Kelly, Chris Watts, and Saatsuma.

We interviewed Maddy about super powers, life advice and deserted islands.

Children of Tomorrow

Children of Tomorrow

By Maddy Kelly - Training and Development Officer

This article delves into the magic behind singing to your children in the early years, with particular emphasis on using lullabies to help children get sleep. This is supported by Dr Anita Collins, a researcher in the impact of music education on cognitive development. Lullabies are sung all over the world and are extraordinary in enabling families to connect with their children and build confidence. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think you can sing in tune. Your voice is the most beautiful thing in the world to your child. Combine that with the power of song and children will be provided with a meaningful sense of security to help them settle in for the night.

This is Abbey who attends Janet’s 3-4 year Elwood Tuesday class.

After Janet spoke about the music staff a few weeks ago, Abbey went home and created her own version out of her crayons.

You'll notice the five lines of the music staff portrayed in this photo.

Abbey has been coming to classes at Elwood since she was a baby.

Have you got a photo or video to share of your little one doing music in some form or another at home?

Simply reply to this email and attach a photo, we'd love to hear from you and we may feature you in the next newsletter!

Treating Burns
By Nataly Tormey - WWC Education www.wwced.com

COMMON MISTAKE = ‘Treat burns using ice"

Although it makes perfect sense to use ice to cool something down, this is likely to do more harm than good in the case of burns. Ice that is just out of the freezer tends to stick to things it touches, which is not what you want when contending with skin damaged by a burn. The best way to take the heat out of the burn without causing further harm is to gently run it under cold water for at least twenty minutes.
