Our 6-15 month classes are designed to develop the confidence of the primary care giver to share a love of music with the young child in their care. Songs and activities are introduced that can be integrated into the baby's daily routine so that quality musical experiences are a part of their everyday life. Lap plays and movement activities allow babies to experience a sense of steady beat, and props and puppets are used to encourage focus. Percussion instruments are played in stop and start activities to extend babies' listening skills and peekaboo activities gently develop their confidence.

A Mini Maestros 'Rock and Rhyme' CD, comprising a selection of songs and rhymes from Mini Maestros classes, a Peek-a-boo Scarf and a Mini Maestros Bag are included when you first enrol in our 6-15 months classes. Each term you will also receive a Mini Maestros music book containing a range of activities learnt in class that can be enjoyed with your child at home.

In our 3-4 year old classes the elements of music are made conscious through stimulating games and visual reinforcement. Children participate in singing and movement activities and play a range of percussion instruments which allow them to experiment and practise skills while becoming familiar with musical terms. These classes have more structure and the children learn skills such as one-to-one correspondence and reading from left to right. These skills develop children's understanding of music and help prepare them for kinder. Children learn some musical terms and begin to recognise a crotchet rest. They also begin to use the music staff. Group activities are designed to help with children's social development and dramatic play is extended to introduce performance in a gentle way. Adults stay in the class, but children participate independently under teacher direction.

When children first enrol in the 3-4 year old program they will receive a Bumblebee hand puppet, a Mini Maestros 'Sing and Swing' CD and a Mini Maestros Bag. The Bumblebee puppet is used as a learning aid in every class throughout the year to assist children with their singing. As the Mini Maestros program is sequentially developed, our 4-5 year old classes are designed for, but not limited to, children who have previously participated in our music education program. Children are taught to read simple notation through stimulating games and visual reinforcement, and basic sight singing techniques are introduced. Each child has a set of chime bars (like a small xylophone with removable notes) so that they can transfer their music literacy skills onto their first tuned instrument. The chime bars are played in ensemble activities where children learn about harmony and part-work. Pre-reading and writing skills introduced in the 3-4 year old program are built upon and extended. Children also participate in dances, singing activities and musical games. They are given regular opportunities to perform for their classmates and the parents.

Children may attend these classes on their own and parents are invited in for the last 10 minutes so that they may observe what has been taught.

When children first enrol in the 4-5 year old program they will receive a set of chime bars, a Mini Maestros Bag and a different music book each term. Children use the music books in class and also for simple and fun 'homework' activities.

These group classes are offered at Doncaster and Essendon West only. The program is for 5-7 year olds who are looking to learn their first formal instrument. Children learn a repertoire of fun, appealing keyboard pieces as they develop their understanding of melodic and rhythmic notation. Opportunities for games, movement activities, playing percussion instruments and group work form part of each class. The first term's fees include an Encore Pack which comprises a keyboard book, a CD and a set of flash cards to assist home practice.

Children need to have a piano or a 61-note keyboard at home for practice purposes.

The intake for these classes is only at the start of each year.

Parents do not need to stay at the lessons, however, they are welcome to observe the class from time to time.
